History
The problem of oncological diseases was addressed publicly for the first time (from patients' point of view) in 2001, when the first association of women with cancer was founded in Plovdiv. Within a few months similar organizations were registered in six other cities: Varna, Russe, Stara Zagora, Haskovo, Pazardjik, Sofia. Shortly afterwards, Yanna Georgieva became a president of BCA. The founders and their colleagues knew they had to raise public awareness if progress was to be made. There were a large number of doctors, patients and family members that had to be reached. The association began reaching out to many cancer patients providing support for them and their families. Members of the association were also writing articles for various publications and recruiting physicians throughout the country to help educate the public. BCA created a network of volunteers whose sole purpose was to wage war on cancer.
